Creating Your Own Photo Art

I love creating digital art and get asked about how I do it all the time. I usually say editing software and witchcraft! Here is a more comprehensive answer for you.

Creating photo art is a creative process that involves using various techniques and tools to transform a photograph into a work of art. Photo art can take many different forms, including digital manipulations, collages, and mixed media pieces. I tend to layer photo’s onto each other using ON1 software - it was the easiest one I could find for me to do without having to learn photoshop.

The first step is selecting the photograph that will be the basis of the artwork. The photograph can be taken by the artist or sourced from a stock photo library. The chosen image should be high resolution and have a strong composition. As you can see from my self portraits there are a few variations of base images that I started with along with the same image being used several times for different effects.

Once the photograph has been selected, the artist can begin to manipulate it using various tools and techniques. This can include adjusting the colour balance, brightness, and contrast of the image to enhance its visual impact. Additionally, the artist may use filters or special effects to create a specific mood or tone in the image.

After the basic adjustments have been made, you can begin to add elements to the image to create a more unique and personalised piece of photo art. This can involve adding text or graphic elements to the image, such as logos, slogans, or other design elements. You may also choose to add other photographic elements, such as textures or patterns, to create a more complex and visually interesting image.

Another popular technique for creating photo art is to use collage or mixed media. This involves combining multiple photographs or other visual elements to create a more complex and layered image.

The final step in creating photo art is to print the image on your preferred medium. I personally love to print my work on aluminium - either brushed or standard as it gives it a different look and feel than canvas. Its personal preference.

Creating photo art can be a complex and multifaceted process that involves using a variety of tools and techniques to transform a photograph into a unique work of art. Whether you are a professional artist or simply interested in experimenting with photography, there are many ways to create stunning photo art that is unique to you.
