Why Meditate ?

Since life is always happening in the present moment, and because we keep ourselves busy with our thoughts either in the past or the present, meditation is a way of anchoring you in the moment.

Meditation is an opportunity to stop and be still. to notice the sounds, smells and sensations in your body. The body is always changing and when you tune into it you can feel how alive it is. Because the mind is so used to thinking and not being, we tend to feel anxious, uneasy or tense when sitting doing nothing.

The mind starts thinking about what needs to be done once you're finished, what’s happening tomorrow, or endless other thoughts that seem to occupy your life. What are you in such a hurry to do? What is wrong with this moment now that needs to be avoided and overlooked? This moment is the peace you yearn, it is the space where life is happening and unfolding now.

Once you realise that you are not the thoughts, meditation becomes a time to observe them and to experience where they take you mentally and emotionally, without reacting to them. Usually reactions and repetitive behaviours are borne out of not being consciously aware of your thoughts, so the ability to detach and observe them puts you in a position of power so to speak.

You start to understand that I am not the thoughts, I am the consciousness behind the thoughts which can be life altering in itself. The more you are able to stay present and aware in the perfection of the ‘now’ the more peaceful your life becomes. You realise that there is no-thing to worry about, no-thing to fix or do until the need arises and can be dealt with.

The more you meditate you notice a space opens in the mind and the thoughts just become fascinating to observe instead of believed and acted upon.

Instead of rushing through life - rushing to go home to cook, rushing through cooking to eat, rushing through eating to watch the tv then rushing through that to go to bed where you then find yourself unable to sleep - why not enjoy each moment, each action or task that you are involved in, and savour the moment for that is your life that you are avoiding and completely missing.
